Stella Nyanzi who works at Makerere University undressed in protest after the Institute’s Social Research Director, Prof Mahmood Mamdani locked her office, with an effort to evict her.
Drama started when Prof Mahmood Mamdani asked Nyanzi to vacate her office because she had refused to partake in a PhD programme at the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR).
Before stripping, Nyanzi shared photos of her locked office terming it as “oppression” and threatened to undress. She then proceeded to Mamdani’s office where she undressed, spreading all her clothing at the door.
This video of Stella undressing has left different sects of people filled with contradictory thought, some wondering if she is mentally ill, and others totally supportive of her ‘brave’ move.
Media sources report that Ethics and Integrity State Minister Simon Lokodo ordered police to arrest her for stripping in public.
“Even if she was offended by anybody, she behaved indecently. I condemn it in the strongest words possible and have directed police to arrest her. She must be brought to book,” said the minister as reported by New Vision.
Pr Cyrus Rod, author, CEO and Founder of Cyrus Rod ministries has this morning taken to social media a number of thoughts, urging that the Stella has For years been fighting what she called the injustice from men against her office; not because she is a feminist but because she is a mother trying to save the livelihood of her kids.
“She suffered injustice first from her husband and now she feels like she has reached her wits end and chooses to publicly undress to protest injustice from other men trying to stop her livelihood. Then there is outrage from many, to quickly condemn her as if her nude protest is worse than the injustice that led her to that act. Who is moral? A mother protesting injustice against the livelihood of her kids or the perpetrators of the injustice?” Pastor Cyrus Wrote.
Pr Cyrus highlighted the Widow from Luke 18 saying, she did things until the judge who neither feared God nor had regard for human beings felt like the widow was about to drive him banana’s.
“You think Dr Stella is so evil? Examine yourself before you condemn her and the children she is trying to save as she keeps on handling a daily injustice from the father of her kids who has left her to raise them single handedly. If we claim that Dr Stella has lost her mind by using her own means to protect the livelihood of her kids, then we are saying that the perpetrators of injustice against her are in their sound minds,”
On the other hand, while appearing on NBS Tv yesterday evening, Miria Matembe, a renowned woman activist cautioned Ugandans against associating Nyanzi’s actions with the women emancipation struggle.
“You should never distort our emancipation by likening it to this madness. This is not what we fought for.”
Matembe noted that Dr Nyazi’s problem is also affecting several other Ugandans, adding that it is usually characteristic of people who have reached their limits.
She said, “This is not a village woman. She is a professor. Makerere has several other avenues like the administration and the council where she could have lodged her complaints.”
