Noela Rukundo was snatched off the street on the orders of her husband Balenga Kalala – but the hitmen showed her mercy and let her go free.
She described watching mourners at the funeral in Melbourne, Australia, before walking up to her astonished husband.
“Surprise! I’m still alive!” she told him – she told the BBC in an interview.
“He put his hands on his head and said, ‘Is it my eyes? Is it a ghost?’ I knew he was a violent man, but I didn’t believe he can kill me. I loved this man with all my heart! I gave him, beautiful and handsome, two boys and one girl. So I don’t know why he chose to kill me.” Noela Rukundo stated
Ms Rukundo said that she was kidnapped by gunmen after she followed the advice of her husband to go and get some fresh air.
When they first told her husband had ordered her death, she refused to believe them, she recalled.
To prove it, they called her husband on a loud speakerphone and she heard his orders: “Kill her”.
However, the hitmen chose to spare her life, telling her “We don’t kill women and children.”
Ms Rukundo contacted a local priest and asked for his help while her husband, believing that his wife was already dead, organised a funeral.
Her husband has been sentenced to nine years in prison for ordering the hit, according to media reports in Australia.
The court heard he was motivated by the false belief that his wife was having an affair.
Ms Rukundo says she has since forgiven her husband but is still in shock – in comments to the Australian ABC news channel.
