Why Canterbury Archbishop Justin Welby is in Uganda

Justin Welby and his delegation will attend Archbishop-elect Kaziimba’s enthronement.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday welcomed the Most Reverand, Lord Archbishop Justin Portal Welby, the 105th archbishop of Canterbury and the most senior bishop in the Church of England at State House Entebbe.

In company with the outgoing Archbishop of Uganda Stanley Ntagali, diocesan bishops of the church of Uganda, clergymen, select parishioners, government officials, and dignitaries, Archbishop Welby was treated to a luncheon at the State House.

The 64-year-old will officiate at the consecration and enthronement of Bishop Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, the 9th Archbishop of the Church of Uganda on 1st March 2020 at St Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe.

“It was a privilege to meet with the President of Uganda Kaguta Museveni today, and celebrate the step that South Sudan’s leaders have taken in forming a government, as well as discussing other challenges and opportunities for Uganda. Please pray for peace in this region,” he tweeted on Friday.

Local media sources report that the service of enthronement of the new Archbishop of the Church of Uganda will be attended by the President and First Lady, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, the Speaker of Parliament and many other government leaders.

In a statement, Church of Uganda revealed that its 39 active Bishops and more than 45 retired Bishops are expected to attend the service of enthronement. In all, they are preparing for 3,000 – 7,000 people.

The Most Rev. Foley Beach, Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America and Chairman of the Gafcon Primates’ Council is expected to preach at the enthronement.
