Uganda was left paralyzed Saturday evening when an unknown group of people kidnapped journalist Gertrude Tumusiime Uwitware.
The NTV Uganda news reporter was reportedly found dumped hours later in the areas of Kira Division .
In her statement to police, she claimed being blind-folded by two people before being driven to a secret location where she was cross-questioned for hours on gun point.
According to the Daily Monitor, the motive of the abduction is not yet known but it came on the heels of death threats the reporter received after she posted on social media defending regime critic and Makerere university research fellow Dr Stella Nyanzi.
In her blog post, Owitwale asserted that educationist Stella Nyanzi only did what we [Ugandans] have feared to do.
She condemned those passing judgment inclined to Nyanzi’s offensive language, without taking in the crucial points being addressed
“After much meditation, I realized she was only being the true Nationalist that this crumbling Nation needed. I am sorry my silence has let my nation down.” She wrote.
Stella’s outrage on social media took a deeper end last month when First Lady and Education Minister Janet Museveni told parliament that the government lacks the funds to fulfil her husband President Yoweri Museveni’s electoral pledge of providing free sanitary pads to school girls.
Nyanzi responded angrily to the development, calling for a pad-raising campaign. When summoned by the police to answer for her comments, the academic responded by calling on her followers to turn up in solidarity at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters with pads.
Thundering Silence of Religious Leaders?
Ugandans have other the last two months expressed discontentment over the scant religious leaders that have came out to address the resolution government passed of postponing provision of free sanitary pads to school girls asserting lacks the funds.
Some believers took to social media calling on Churches to take a stand and spear head the campaign of distributing pads across the country, if they found Stella unfit for this assignment.
Notably, religious leaders that showed up during media interviews majorly condemn the manner in which Stella Nyanzi made her points, calling it un-motherly and totally uncharacteristic.
According to Fr. John Bosco Ssekkomo, given her academic qualifications, Stella Nyanzi would have afforded using proper language to communicate.
Religious leaders’ advice will be swept under the carpet – Owitwale
She writes: “Who will save Ugandans? The army wont, the opposition has failed because of their unending fights, not even my religious leaders can help because their advice is so humble and full of reconciliation and will be swept under the carpet as soon as they say it.
May be we need more of Stella Nyanzi Characters to join the war, to rid this country of these moles eating it at a slow but steady pace.
I stand up, I will fight for mother land as long as I can, this is a solemn pledge I make, I’m only answerable to God who will ask me what my contribution was to this world.”
