Pictures are everywhere – all around us and one of the great things is there are no language barriers. Race, religion, background, upbringing or your native tongue does not get in the way.
They say that a picture speaks a thousand words – and these photographers proves it. This year’s Uganda Press Photo Award winners have been announced, courtesy of the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
The award aims to promote the best of today’s photojournalism in Uganda as well as encouraging a new generation of photographers. It also seeks to remind the viewing public of the importance of a vibrant press for democratic development.
Seven finalists out of a long list of 130 photographers who entered the competition won the respective categories that included creativity, news, daily life, nature, portrait among others.
Siraj Muyingo’s photograph was declared the overall best image from over 1000 images that were submitted. Muyingo’s exceptional photograph entitled Sheltered also won the portrait category .
His photo depicts an image of Zephaniah, a 12-year old boy working at the family farm in Butaleja in eastern Uganda. He received a CANON sponsored EOS 7D MARK II DSLR camera.
The Seven finalists were selected by the jury, which this year consisted of six prominent photographers, and curators including Frédérick Noy, Carl de Souza, Neo Ntsoma, Katrin Peters-Klaphake, Annette Sebba and Jide Adeniyi-Jones.
