Thousands on Saturday 9th July 2016 gathered at Bomah Grounds, Kitgum to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Mama Irene Gleeson (RIP).

The celebrations were additionally intended to support 10,000 disadvantaged children in 22 Primary Schools with books and pens to help improve literacy and numeracy.

“This year, the drive is intended to raise support for the much needed books and pens. We will also be raising awareness about the plight of these children and help catalyse sustainable improvement in the quality of education in the region,” said the Irene Gleeson Foundation earlier, through a press statement.

Leaving behind a much-admired legacy, the Irene Gleeson Foundation, through John Pau Kiffasi, the Executive Director, reports that in PLE 2015, 0.6% of candidates got Division 1 in Lamwo District, and in Kitgum District only 3.5% of candidates scored Division 1.

“We can all help to improve the quality and equality of education for children at the grassroots, who have to sit the same examinations with students in Kampala and other urban towns with better resources. Be a part of the solution,”

Mama Irene’s final wish to help reduce the alarming maternal and infant mortality rates in the area was achieved in 2014 and 2015. Thousands of people walked and contributed towards the completion of the 3-storey Maternal and Infant Health facility.

The HIT Awards at Serena Hotel Kampala honored the late Irene with The HIT Lifetime Achievement honorary award.

The award was received by her family and, speaking to the congregation, one of Mama Irene’s granddaughters spoke of her as having been a dedicated Christian, concerned about the needs of the Children above anything else.
