First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Mrs Janet Museveni has told health workers that regardless of how much they earn, they should serve with diligence to please God “who called them into service.”

“Even your anthem spells it clear that you were chosen by God to save lives of people,” she said.

Mrs Museveni who was on a visit to assess the performance of Masaka School of comprehensive Nursing and Midwifery in Masaka district, gave an example of a medical worker at Jinja Referral Hospital whose hard work prompted fellow medics to call for her promotion.

“She replied to her colleagues; If God knows it, then I am more satisfied with that, than getting a promotion or a pay rise,” Mrs Museveni narrated.

“This is the spirit I want you to emulate, because when you please God, then the people will also be pleased,” she continued.

The wife to the President explained that she was impressed by the skills demonstrated by nursing students, which she said gave her an impression that they would use them at their work places.

Reports of medics mistreating patients however dismayed Mrs Museveni who then wondered what happens to the skills nursing students demonstrate while at school.

“Medics are rude, they do not want to attend to expectant mothers and other patients and are always doing their own things, even when they are called,” Mrs Museveni said.

She stressed it to the students that the skills are not meant to stay at school but to be implemented at the health centers where they are deployed, calling upon instructors to emphasize it when teaching them.

Mr Kalanzi Mark, the school’s principal applauded the First Lady for considering visiting the school and appealed for more funding from the government.
