One of the first Bible translators for the Aghem people in Cameroon has been murdered during an attack on his village, Uganda Christian News has learnt.
In a press release on Friday, Wycliffe Bible Translators (UK) said Mr Benjamin Tem died on the night of 20 October, following an attack in Wum, a city found in North-West Province, Cameroon.
He was one of the original cohort of trained translation workers on the Aghem Bible translation project, the press release said.
Benjamin leaves behind a wife and five children.
‘This sad news is a reminder of the urgent need for the gospel in Cameroon. There will be no lasting peace without the reconciliation that Jesus brings. We are working with local partners to ensure that all Cameroonians can read the Bible in their own language. Please pray that this would be achieved, and that people would turn to Jesus in the midst of the current crisis.’ James Poole, Executive Director of Wycliffe was quoted as saying.
This is not the first time a bible translator has been killed in Cameroon.
Two months ago, a Cameroonian man named Angus Abraham Fung was murdered in his home during an overnight attack. Fung worked with Wycliffe Bible Translators and was a Literacy Coordinator on the Aghem Bible translation project.
On the day of the attack, Fung’s wife, Eveline, had a hand cut off.
