The 2021 Royal Gospel Music Awards (RGMA) took place on 12th December at the UCF Dome in the central business district Kampala.
Top honors went to Levixone, who received accolades for Artist of the Year, Male Artist Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Collaboration Of The Year, and Zouk Song Of The Year.
Pastor Wilson Bugembe received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Lena Price was announced Female Artist Of The Year.
As with all awards shows this season, the Royal Gospel Music Awards had to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines by having a limited audience. The live show featured performances from Rachel Namubiru, Colifixie, Ken B, Wake among others.
“This right here is a dream I have had for the last 15 years,” Royal Gospel Music Awards CEO, Mr. Wesley said in his speech. “This marks the beginning of great things ahead of us.”
“I want to thank all of you nominees here, most specially producers who produce gospel music, and the artists for investing in all your money to do music for Jesus,” he continued.
Mr. Wesley urged that many gospel ministers have remained consistent even without returns whatsoever.
“We won’t stop at anything until the gospel is in each and every conner of this country,” he assured the audience. Wesley encouraged unity among gospel musicians, trust, and reliance on God, revealing how mainstream companies were unwilling to sponsor the event due to its set location among other factors.
“We do these awards to encourage each and everyone of you that the work that you do is appreciated,” he said.
Christian leaders at the event included Pastor Gerald Mwebe of Streams of Life Ministries, Kampala, who thanked the artists for “singing the Gospel.” “The Gospel is the greatest thing that has been entrusted of humanity, to take it to the four conners of the earth. We have to be proclaimers of the Gospel,” he said.
He then quoted Jonah 3:1 which reads, “Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.”
“Keep the content clear. The Gospel is a clear cut message. We do not preach what we want, neither should you sing what you want… Sing the Gospel,” Pastor Mwebe said.
