The first Chancellor of Uganda Christian University and former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Bishop Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo has passed away at 82.

The deceased, having battled cancer of the oesophagus for a while, is confirm to have breathed his last when receiving treatment at Kampala Hospital on Friday morning.

His passing comes as a shock to many who saw him return from United Kingdom in June after what was thought to have been a successful surgery.

UG Christian News in January 2017 reported that Bishop Nkoyooyo’ s son, Mr Isaac Nkoyooyo had launched a fundraising campaign, reaching out to international charity organisations and individuals to contribute towards his father’s surgery billed at Shs265m.

On the GoFundMe international platform, the family had posted: “The family and friends of the retired Archbishop of Uganda, Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo are trying to raise funds to cater for his medical expenses. The archbishop became ill around November and he is going to require emergency surgery in London. Without medical insurance, each and every expense is falling no the family. Please consider donating to help the family with medical expenses and travel expenses,”

The update came after Nkoyoyo (RIP) had left Uganda for the United Kingdom (UK) to get cancer treatment, however he was reportedly stuck in the nation due to insufficient funding to cater for his hospital bills.

As uproar spread on social media with Christians condemning government for “neglecting” the Bishop, the family contacted State House and the Church leadership to give a helping hand. The same month, President Yoweri Museveni donated 23,000 dollars (Shs82 million) towards the cause.

During the 50th marriage anniversary thanksgiving service for Archbishop Nkoyoyo and his wife Ruth in 2015 at Namirembe Cathedral, Museveni commended Nkoyoyo for the faithful service that “touched and caused transformation in the lives of many Ugandans.”

The President said his ideals and personality had been a great encouragement to many people.
