Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda will on 27th May, 2017 flag off a symbolic walk of faith that traces the brutal trail of the Uganda Martyrs’ last days to their final martyrdom.

The remembrance walk organized by the Catholic Church will begin from Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine and end at St. Matia Mulumba Parish in Old Kampala, where believers will then seal it off with the Holy Mass.

“As we walk in their footsteps, we shall use this opportunity to deepen our faith and spiritually connect with the Uganda Martyrs.” The Catholic Church says.

Each year, on 3rd June, Christians from Uganda and beyond gather at the Catholic and the Anglican shrines, which are within a kilometer apart in Namugongo. The shrines are celebratory grounds for the Uganda Martyrs, a group of Christians who were executed for their faith.

The martyrs were burnt to death following the orders of the then King of Buganda, Kabaka Mwanga II in 1885 and 1886 for refusing to denounce Christianity.

A total number of 46 were killed; 22 of whom were Roman Catholics and 24 were Anglican Christians.

This walk will start at 8.00 a.m. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda will be joined by the Minister of Tourism Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, the Archbishop of Kampala – His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito-Lwanga, as well as the Bishop of the animating Diocese of Hoima, His Lordship Vincent Kirabo Amooti.
