The Parliament of Uganda has on Wednesday held a prayer breakfast for the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), slated for 22nd-29th September, 2019 at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.
According to a release from Parliament, various officials led by the Speaker of Parliament prayed for the nation’s security as Uganda plans to host the reputable conference it last hosted in 1967.
Over 1,000 dignitaries are expected to attend the event including Members of Parliament, Clerks of Parliament, Staff of Parliament, Speakers of Parliament and their accompanying persons of the Commonwealth Country
Rev Christine Shimanya, the Anglican Parliamentary Chaplain, who led the prayer session was quoted was saying that since the conference is marketing the country, the church is obliged to dedicate time and pray for the nation.
“We think this is one of our answered prayers that Uganda is recognized by the entire world to host this event, so it is so important that we pray for safe of people who are travelling in and guests who will visit our tourism sites,” Rev Christine Shimanya said.
Shimanya said Ugandans should be expectant of CPC as it exposes Uganda to the entire world, an opportunity she termed as golden. The conference will run under the theme, “Adaption, engagement and evolution of Parliaments in a rapidly changing Commonwealth”.
“This conference is bringing out the image of Uganda to the entire world, all people will be looking at this small country, we have an opportunity to expose our resources and display whatever we have to the entire world.”
The Speaker while officiating at the breakfast, commended the organizing committee which she said is at the stage when it can host legislators from the commonwealth states “we have gone along way; from the time of mobilizing resources, then setting up committees, I think God has been walking with, we are grateful to Him that after 52 years we are able to bring the world together again in Uganda” Kadaga said.
The conference topics, according to a state-linked news daily, will focus on the following issues: climate change, innovations in parliaments, facilitation for Persons with a disability, youth round table, CPA Lecture, urbanization, sexual harassment, separation of powers (checks and balances), post-legislative scrutiny, and CPA Benchmarks for democratic legislatures.
