H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially launched a bible translated to lugwere language and pledged to donate 100m towards the bible project.
This grand launch attended by several religious leaders took place on Saturday at Budaka Ssaza Grounds, Budaka district.
As this website reported earlier, Bishop Vincent Watolya, chairman of the bible translation committee confirmed to media reporters that bible translation to lugwere was finalized by June this year and, printing commenced in South Korea with support from UK-based Summer Institute of Linguistics.
This was said as the Bishop addressed members of the Jinja Bagwere Burial and Development Association in Budhumbuli village, Bugembe town council early June.
President Museveni, in his speech has said that one way of keeping language alive is though translating the Bible. He has also emphasized that he does not understand those who want to kill cultures of other people.
Lugwere, is the language most spoken by people found in the eastern part of Uganda. According to Bible society of Uganda (BSU ), during the translation process, a panel of translators, comprising members from each of the major denominations of Anglican, Pentecostal, Roman Catholic, Adventists and Orthodox is assembled.
The organisation’s general secretary, Simon Peter Mukhama says the process of translating a Bible in a single language is long and tiresome, lasting as many as 15 years, “because at the end of it, the translated Bible must not only have good content but the language used must be acceptable by the people.”
Full translations have so fur been made so as to have; Luganda Bible, Acholi Bible, Alur Bible, Ateso Bible, Kakwa Bible, Kinadi Bible, Kinyarwanda Bible, Kumam Bible, Lango Bible, Lugbara Bible, Ng’akarimojong Bible, Runyakole-Rukiga Bible, Runyoro-Rutooro Bible and Lusoga Bible.
