Kampala – With just a few days to Thursday’s fiercely contested presidential election, police has held leading opposition candidate Dr Kizza Besigye as he tried to access the Kampala Central Business District using the Kampala – Jinja Road.
Uganda’s police chief Kale Kayihura says he is unaware of reports that Besigye has been arrested, reports the BBC’s Ruth Nesoba.
Mr Kayihura does confirm that police fired tear gas to disperse supporters, and some of them were arrested.
He clarifies that they are ‘holding’ him because he disobeyed orders not to disrupt traffic in the capital, Kampala, something that doesn’t imply that he has been arrested.
Police say that he should be directed soon and taken to his next campaign rally.
