Uganda opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been released on Sh100 million non-cash bond pending the hearing of his treason case.

Besigye was charged in May with treason , a capital offence in the country after holding protests against President Museveni’s re-election and swearing himself in as president.

He was arrested that month in downtown Kampala and flown to Moroto, where he has been in custody ever since.

The FDC Former Presidential Candidate applied for bail on Monday with his treason trial ongoing at the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court.

In his ruling, High court Judge Wilson Musene Masalu ordered Dr. Besigye to report to court every two weeks.

He cautioned Besigye against use of violence through his trial and urged that he (Besigye) satisfied court on circumstances provided by law in his bail application.

Additionally calling for tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation, Judge Wilson further said Besigye was in 2005 charged with a similar offense and, he complied with the bail condition when he reported to court on all 39 times.
