In regards to songwriting, gospel musicians should be motivated by the Holy Spirit and not a desire for hits, Pastor and worship leader Isaac Serukenya has said.
He revealed during a live talk show on Rest TV that the kind of Gospel music that transforms lives and transcends generations comes as a result of the Holy Spirit revealing God’s thoughts, and guiding the writer into all truth.
“Once you write what the Holy Spirit instructed, even if it is one word ”Hallelujah,’ it will do what it is supposed to do,” he explained, noting that authentic christian music is anointed by God to convict the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment.
Serukenya emphasized that each gospel song serves a specified purpose and God-ordained season.
“The Holy Spirit loves to communicate with us. He loves to start things and follow them through all the way to the end. For a lot of people, they know the Holy Spirit is there, but ignore talking with Him… He’s willing to talk to you. He’s not interested in you getting in ministry to experience difficulty. He’s there from the beginning and the moment you involve Him in your situation, that’s when you find clarity,” the worship leader said.
Serukenya, who have his life to Christ in 1987, also highlighted the essential role of mentorship in ministry, urging that everything about scripture, from the book of Genesis up to the book of Revelation, ‘is about one passing on the mantle to another.’
“Jesus’ ministry started at 30, not to say He was not doing anything before. At 33, he went back to the Father. What was He doing in those 3 years? The moment he started his ministry, the first thing he did was to make disciples… He was trying to download to them what needs to get done in order to establish the church as you see today,” Serukenya said.
Servant leadership is probably one of the most talked about leadership model of our generation. Serukenya urged that gospel musicians need a Christ-like attitude and should not be rooted in selfish ambitions.
“Leading, for others to follow, can only happen if you have an attitude of servitude whereby you know that you are here to serve. ‘I’m serving the Lord and I’m serving the people that I’m leading,’ that should be the attitude,” he said. “What people do not realize is that is that humility is a key that opens the door to everything that you will ever want.”
Quoting Proverbs 4:23, Serukenya observed that learning to guard our hearts against all kinds of distractions from ministry is an important part of our spiritual walk.
“Every issue you will ever have in life is a byproduct of what you are allowed to migrate from your eyes into your heart. I must make sure every issue that flows out of my life to the people I am ministering to is an issue of love, forgiveness, gentleness, and all the fruits of the Holy Spirit put together, because that is what the world needs today,” he said.
