USA – Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University are currently looking for volunteers that can be tested during an upcoming clinical trial for a vaccine that may cure HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The team is recruiting about 400 healthy people who will be screen for the relatively common cytomegalovirus. The virus behaves in a similar way to HIV in the body, and will allow researchers to development a treatment that effectively trains the immune system to target the virus, something that up to now, has been almost impossible.

“HIV is the poster child because it affects so many people, but there are many other conditions that are also extremely challenging to prevent or cure,” said Dr. Marcel Curlin, an infectious disease specialist at OHSU who will run the HIV trials.

Research like this takes significant amounts of time to see results from, but having a potential HIV vaccine move closer to the clinical trial phase is a major advancement in our battle against one of the world’s most deadly diseases.
