The subject of music for church is an old yet ever new topic, and one on which complete agreement can scarcely be expected. In the hope of contributing to growth and unity, popular recording gospel minister, worship leader and Pastor Twina Herbert recently offered some detailed counsel.

Among other things, Pastor Twina Herbert explained Monday that what differentiates gospel ministers from secular artists is their motive and source of inspiration.

He stated that gospel music should be a ministry because the ultimate objective is to spread the good news (gospel) of Jesus Christ.

“We do not sing what people want to hear,” he said, during the African Exclusive show hosted by Easy Samuel and Gaby Grey on Spirit TV – Uganda.

“We are not fine-tuned by the market,” he continued.

“Secular music is created according to demand, however, with gospel music, one must know the message that God wants to send out to the audience,” he said.

He explained that gospel music is another channel through which God speaks to His people.

“You must be speaking God’s heart, and you cannot do this, unless you have a solid relationship with Him,” he emphasised.

The lead pastor of Family Life Church, Kawempe – Uganda, is known for songs including “Sabisanira”, “Mwoyo Tonta”, “Siryerabira”, “Njagala Engeri” and many more.

Pastor Twina said that when a song is “biblically good” it will be “timeless because even after several years, people will still want to listen to it.”

“We are competing with secular music which is wrong, Gospel music has to remain as Gospel which is the good news of Jesus Christ,” he said .
