State House Uganda – President Museveni earlier today officiated at the opening of the fresh peace negotiations between the government of Burundi and opposition groups.
President Museveni was appointed chief mediator by the East African Community in July 2015. The talks are supported by the East African Community, the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations.
The Burundi unrest that was triggered by the proposal to allow the country’s president, Pierre Nkurunziza, to run for a third term in office has been on-going for eight months now with At least 200,000 refugees created, 600 protestors arrested and about 250 lives lost.
The President has appealed to all sides in the conflict to try and reach a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Burundi.
Amongst the facilitators are:
* Dr. Crispus Kiyonga – the Minister of Defence and Chief Facilitator
* Dr. Richard Ssezibera – Secretary General of the East African Community.
* Dr. Speciosa N. Wandira – Vice President Emeritus
