State Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Father Simon Lokodo while addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre on Monday warned government officials against porn consumption.
The 59-year-old was announcing the newly appointed Pornography Control Committee when we fired at state officials who he said waste time in office to watch pornographic material.
Such individuals risk being arrested and losing their jobs, Lokodo said, noting that the penalty for one caught consuming pornography is a 2-year jail sentence.
Watching, distributing and having nude images or videos on mobile and electronic devices in Uganda can land you in jail under the anti-pornography law, which parliament passed in 2014 with an aim to “stamp pornography out of the Ugandan society.”
As part of the clampdown, Lokodo inaugurated the Pornography Control Committee that will be chaired by Dr. Annette Kezaabu Kasimbazi, the deputy vice chancellor Kampala International University (KIU).
Dr. Martin Sempa, Dalton Opwonya, Sheik Mohammad Ali Waiswa, Joan Kyomugisha, Gastone Byamugisha, Hafisa Kabagonja, Victoria Sentamu and Fred Nyakori are the other members of the committee expected to officially oversee and implemente the anti-pornography law.
“Government has approved UgShs 2 billion for the pornography control committee for this year. The committee was inaugurated this morning before I came here and it is now operational so we are ready to fight this graft of pornography.” Fr Lokodo said.
“Pornography is the deadliest moral disease in Uganda and has damaged young people’s moral fibre. It has hindered us from transforming the country. Young people aspend UgShs 30,000 on downloading pornography instead of using this money to feed themselves.” He added.
“The committee is going to expedite the process of getting a pornography detecting software which will be installed to distill what you are consuming. We have already arrested and prosecuted some people and more arrests will be made.” The Minister said.
