First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni on Sunday called on Ugandans to learn to co-exist even amidst differences. This was during a special Parliamentary sitting in which MPs paid tribute to Hon. Col. (rtd) lbrahim Abiriga, MP for Arua Municipality.
The 62-year-old was shot dead near his home in Kawanda, Wakiso on Friday 8 June 2018 together with his body guard, who was also his younger brother.
Mrs Museveni questioned who could have hated Hon Abiriga so much to the extent of murder. She said Hon. Abiriga was a very humble person. “I wonders whether the killers are trying to tell Ugandans that serving your country with love is a crime,” she said.
Janet Kataaha prayed that the murder of Hon. Abiriga “forces everyone concerned to find answers to these killings.”
The late was survived by 9 children and a widow. MPS expressed concern on whether there is a plan to support the family.
“Hon. Abiriga has been talked about as a patriot, honest man and very loyal. I hope that patriotism will be reflected in how we care for his children. I hope the children benefit from their father’s patriotism,” Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye said.
Killings in Uganda have nothing to do with religion, Gen Moses Ali said as he paid tribute to the late.
Elsewhere, the President is expected to attend Hon Abiriga’s burial on Monday, and promised to meet the family members there after.
He pledged government support towards the burial expenses and that the same will also be extended to the children of the deceased in School.
“Abiriga has been a staunch NRM supporter so by killing him they think they have killed the NRM Party. By killing Abiriga, the enemy is clearly working to hurt NRM,” he said earlier.
