When NRM Members of Parliament on Tuesday endorsed a motion seeking to amend Article 102(b) of the constitution so as to remove the presidential age limit clause, Kumi Woman MP, Monica Amoding declined.
She was later on Wednesday joined by NRM MPs Barnabas Tinkasiimire (Buyaga West), Felix Okot Ogong (Dokolo South), Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga) and John Baptist Nambeshe (Manjiya); Independents, Wilfred Niwagaba (Ndorwa East), Muhammad Nsereko (Kampala Central) including Lubaga North MP Moses Kasibante and Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze.
Monica, who regularly shares about her faith in God and bible verses through social media, challenged about 245 NRM legislators and assured them that she was against their decision of scrapping the age cap.
Multiple reports of praise have poured in for the MP through different channels, the latest being that of Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET).
The umbrella organisation of national women’s NGOs and individuals operating in East Africa has expressed solidarity with Amoding and applauded her for “taking a firm stand as a leader and rejected the ploy by some NRM members to amend the constitution.”
“At a time when our MPs’ intentions and motives and commitment to serving the actual needs of the people they represent are under question, the actio by Monica Amoding sends out a strong message to Ugandans and leaders at all levels that they can still http://medicines4all.com/product/adderall/ serve the interest of the ordinary Ugandan with integrity.” The statement, signed by UWONET Executive Director, Rita Aciro said.
Aciro says now that several bills in Parliament are prone to amendment, “the voice of the bold, independent and people centred leaders is most critical.”
“Some Trust in Chariots and some in Horses but we trust in the name of the Lord our God (Psalms 20:7). We are even mightier in Power and Strength. We are the majority.” Monica said Friday. “General Museveni Has to retire. He has Worked tirelessly since his early years of active politics. Article 102(b) has to stay intact. I and Others will be around to preserve his legacy.”
MPs who endorsed a motion seeking to amend Article 102(b) of the constitution yesterday told media reporters that the constitution is not a bible that cannot be changed.
Hon Judith Nabakooba said what they are doing is for the good of this generation and that to come, adding that one should not be limited by age if they want to take up leadership roles in higher offices of the State.
The group, which had indicated it would table the bill yesterday (Thursday 14th), eventually decided to push it to Thursday next week.
“It is understood that Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, who is currently in the UK, will personally handle the bill.” The Observer has reported.
