Due to the surging Covid-19 infections, the Ugandan government has cautioned Churches against holding overnight prayer meetings to usher in 2021 this coming week.

In a statement on Sunday, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance Hon Judith Nabakooba said Christians should “stay at home” and pray as a family.

“Please stay in your homes and welcome the new year with your family,” she said. “Let us use the New Year’s Eve to thank the Almighty for having kept us alive and pray for a better 2021,” she added.

According to the minister, Police will not give any permission for fireworks this year.

“Fireworks are usually accompanied by people staying up late and gathering around a particular place. This gathering and fun-fair increases the risk of spreading COVID-19,” Hon Nabakooba said.

“All other public end of year festivities such as concerts, overnight prayers , discotheques are not allowed,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) also suspended campaign meetings in Kampala and 11 other districts and cities in the country. This is part of the emergency measure being employed by the government to halt the pandemic.

COVID-19 cases rose to 33,563 on Saturday with 245 virus deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.
