The Covid-19 National Taskforce has proposed the reopening of church buildings and other places of worship in the country with a maximum of 70 people at a service. This is according to sources who attended the committee’s meeting on Monday.
Speaking to the Daily Monitor Newspaper, the sources said church buildings should commence phased re-opening for public worship in strict conformity with all guidelines and protocols approved by the Ministry of Health.
The proposal was sent to President Yoweri Museveni for final consideration and approval, the source told the Newspaper.
In the same proposal, the team headed by Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda reportedly proposed the reopening of Entebbe airport, boarders and universities for final year medical students.
The Task-force said Covid regulations should be strictly enforced in Kampala with penalties, which include community work and fines to those who defy the guidelines.
The senior presidential advisor on epidemics, Dr Monica Musenero, spoke to the Daily Monitor about this development.
“Those were proposals and the final decision will be made after the meeting today (yesterday) with President Museveni. Anything there can change because the President not only makes the final decision but there are other people who might be in the meeting and might propose alternatives. We usually have various debates and President Museveni makes a decision based on sound evidence,” Dr Musenero stated.
