The two Christians who earlier this month rushed to Court seeking permission to file a representative suit on behalf of other believers, against renowned Preacher Aloysius Bujingo for allegedly violating their freedom to worship by burning several versions of the Holy Bible have officially been given a go-ahead.
The Nabweru Chief Magistrates’ court has granted Aloysius Matovu Kizza, a former Dembe FM presenter now working with Kingdom TV and Francisco Evangelist Ssemugooma on behalf of over 200 Christians who endorse the Holy Bible to sue Bugingo.
Nabweru Chief Magistrate Esther Nasambu made the ruling last week after presiding over the hearing of the case in the interests of one side only.
“A representative order is hereby issued, granting the duo permission to sue Bugingo on their won behalf and on behalf of and the benefit of numerous people who are Christians, who have continued to be injured by and, therefore, have the same interest claim against Bugingo in the intended suit.” The magistrate stated.
The applicants layer Anthony Wameli has told reporters from one local news daily that he intends to file a plaint this week containing facts about the cause of action against Bugingo and to get summons to have him defend him-self regarding the said allegations.
In their plaint, Wameli says they will seek punitive and exemplary damages for Bugingo’s unlawful actions. Damages from sh1m to sh50m can be rewarded to the aggrieved party if they win the case, New Vision reports.
Although it is not yet confirmed who the witnesses to this case are, the duo say they have evidence against Pr Bugingo and that he indeed ordered the collecting and burning of different versions of the Holy Bible written in different languages, an act the preacher denied publicly.
Pr Bugingo in April 2016 told his congregation that he was in no way associated to images that surfaced on social media of bibles being burnt . He urged that he could never do such a thing, hence had no attachment whatsoever to what media reporters alleged.
This website later learnt that the preacher had a meeting with the team from National Fellowship of Born Again Pentecostal Churches (NFBPC) in Uganda over the matter.
A press statement from the umbrella organisation dated 23rd April, 2017 revealed that Pr Bugingo accepted to corporate and assured the clergy that he is not going to pursue controversies attained to the bible independently.
Notably, as UG Christian News reported recently, Aloysius Matovu Kizza and Francisco Evangelist Ssemugooma have faced heavy criticism as some Christians urge that “A true christian is supposed to take such a case to God, not to an earthly court. It is God Himself to judge His people.”
