President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged Ugandans not to forget the main reason for celebrating Christmas.

The day is celebrated globally and in many homesteads, simply characterised by merry-making.

“Christmas is a time when all believers in the Christian faith celebrate the birth of the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ,” he said.

“The merry-making which is always associated with the festive season should not destruct you from focusing on the spiritual significance of Christmas,” he added.

The Head of State urged that Christmas “is the genesis of man’s salvation and redemption from death, which is the consequence of sin.”

“I encourage you to welcome into your hearts the message of love, compassion and care for one another, generosity, holiness and faithful worship of God,” he said.

Moving on, Mr Museveni attributed Uganda’s success in the COVID-19 fight to God.

He nevertheless called for more observance to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by the Ministry of Health to limit transmission of the virus. It should be noted that results of COVID-19 tests done on 23 December 2021 confirmed 1,251 new cases. The cumulative confirmed cases are 133,232.

“I urge you to embrace the countrywide vaccination campaign and to continue observing the standard operating procedures to curb the spread of the virus,” the President said.
