The situation in Western Uganda’s Rwenzururu region remains tense after violence between Ugandan security forces and royal guards from the Rwenzururu Kingdom broke out, resulting in the deaths of at least 100 people.

Apart from the arrest of King Charles Wesley Mumbere, the police also arrested 139 royal guards of the Rwenzururu palace, a journalist from Kenya’s KTN news, Joy Doreen Biira, as she tried to cover the clashes, posting a video of the burning palace on her Instagram account.

Christians from Rwenzori region have this week gathered at Christ the King Church in Kampala, Uganda’s capital to pray and pray tribute to the victims of the clashes.

The mourners lit up candles as they paid tribute, with prayers led by Fr Charles Kagheni Muhindo.

Years of clashes ended in 1982 with an agreement for more local autonomy and President Yoweri Museveni officially recognised the kingdom in 2009, but tensions have continued to simmer.

Between February and March this year, more than 50 people were killed in clashes between security forces and rebels, according to police figures.
