A bus transporting Watoto children for prayers was involved in an accident at Nakirebe, along Masaka road, in the central region of Uganda on Thursday.
A state linked news daily estimated the number of passengers at about 50, adding that 30 had serious injuries.
No death cases reported. Details of the injured are still scanty.
Media reports show that the accident occurred at about 5am as the bus from Watoto Suubi Children’s Village, an isuzu bedford registration number UAQ 389Z, transported the young stars to the central branch, downtown Kampala.
Police received assistance from local residents in the area who offered their cars to take the injured to near by health centers, including case hospital.
Eye witnesses attributed the accident to over-speeding and reckless driving by a taxi driver who lost control.
Police officials told media they were still getting details of the victims as investigations into the accident continue.
Since its establishment in 1994, the Watoto Organization has been dedicated to providing care and opportunities for orphaned and vulnerable children in Uganda. Through its care, children are able to receive education and medical support so they can become contributing members of society with a bright future.
In a press statement late Thursday evening, Watoto Church said “we thank God that no life was lost.”
“Some of the children sustained minor injuries and these are being treated at local hospitals. Most of the children are safe back home where our mothers and other team members continue to provide the care and support they need,” the statement read in part.
“We pray for the well being of everyone during this Easter season. Be safe on the roads as you travel,” it added.
