A sect of Christians have applauded Apostle Tumwine Charles for standing in solidarity with anti age limit removal demonstrators on social media a few hours ago.
The New Life Harvest church international team leader has updated his profile picture with the ‘Don’t Rape Our Constitution’ frame that was designed by ‘Proudly Ugandan’ for citizens against the decision to change Article 102 (b) of the constitution of Uganda.
“Are you against changing our constitution to lift the presidential age limit? Say it by adding this frame to your profile Pic.” Proudly Ugandan, a community group on Facebook said earlier this month when it introduced the fame that has since gone viral.
This campaign also goes by popular slogan ‘togikwatako’ (Hands off the constitution) which DP officials launched at their party headquarters.
Apostle Tumwine’s move generated excitement among followers, who have credited him for clarifying his stand on this controversial bill. “Tebajikwatako”, He went ahead and responded to one of the social media users who said “religious leaders, the voice should be bold enough.”
Unlike Apostle Tumwine, Church leaders under umbrella organisation, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) issued a statement on Monday calling upon government to consider carrying out a referendum before proceeding with efforts to table the bill.
The group did not say ‘they support’ or “are against” the bill, something that ignited mixed reactions among Ugandans.
The religious leaders described “the lifting of the age limit on the presidency as a “delicate matter” which ought not to be monopolized by politicians in parliament.”
