In protest of the 18th February presidential election results, where the electoral commission declared president Museveni as winner, the party spokesperson Mr. Ssemujju Nganda launched a “Free My Vote campaign” early March 2016
The campaign included calling upon all Ugandan across the country to pray for the nation and to pray against the [by then] continued house arrest of the party’s former president (who was also party flag bearer in the presidential election), Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Last week, the deputy Chief Justice, Steven Kavuma stopped Dr Kizza Besigye and the party leadership from carrying out their planned peaceful demonstrations on May 5 2016. This order also included a halt on further holding of the Tuesday prayers by the opposition party.
The order followed an exparte argument of an application for interim orders by the deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana.
In his application, Rukutana said the act of carrying out the defiance campaign by Besigye and FDC with the aim of obtaining control of government of Uganda is inconsistent with several articles of the constitution.
The deputy Chief Justice also ordered the constitutional court registrar to ensure that the orders of court are enforced.
Today morning, while addressing the FDC weekly press briefing at the party’s office in Najjanankumbi, the FDC party president Gen.Mugisha Muntu confirms that they will continue holding the Tuesday prayer sessions saying its a spiritual right.
“We never knew this government could degenerate to the level of manipulating the constitutional court to make such orders stopping prayers. Prayers are governed by the laws of God. They are above any government.” he further said as the New Vision reports.
