A record number of baptisms took place Saturday in western Uganda, as new converts including a 90-year-old, professed their faith in Jesus Christ.
Nearly 500 people turned out at the Daystar Cathedral International Church’s outdoor baptism, which was held at Lake View Resort – Kiyanja in Mbarara district.
Pentecostal Church leader and founder of Daystar Cathedral Bishop Nassan Ibrahim Turyamureeba described the baptism as “remarkable” and “historical”, urging that a significant number of believers had travelled long distances just to be part of the event.
“We are doing exactly what John the Baptist did when he baptized Jesus Christ,” he said. “Baptism means to immerse.”
“Over 500 people today were baptized in the Name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
“We encourage them to do three (3) things; keep their lives in Church, read the Word of God and serve God. This is what will help them continue overcoming the power of satan and sin,” he said.
It was a record number of attendees and people choosing to take the spiritual plunge to physically show their commitment to their faith.
After the baptism, the ministry distributed various essentials among the new converts and community including food worth 12 million.
We are called to share God’s love with the community, Bishop Nassan stated.
He explained that those who received Christ and were baptized included people who formerly adhered to traditional beliefs or practices. Others were from the Catholic, Islamic and Protestant faith.
Large gatherings still worrisome
Bishop Nassan asserted the Church recommended preventive measures for COVID-19 at the event, with attendants being encouraged to observe social distancing, wear face masks and sanitize at the main entrance.
