Snoop Dogg has responded to critics questioning his move into gospel music.
The legendary rapper, real name Calvin Broadus in February released his gospel album, ‘Bible of Love’ and featured gospel heavyweights like Tye Tribbett, Fred Hammond, and B. Slade (formerly known as Tonex).
Relevant Magazine reported that the gospel stars that joined Snoop to produce the project vouched for the rapper, saying that the work is coming from a real place.
During his performance at the Stellar Gospel Music Awards, Snoop was put in the lime light to explain his sudden transition from secular to gospel music.
“It was always in me from the moment I came into the music industry, I always had gospel music influences,” Snoop said.
When questioned what he thought about people who were unhappy that a secular artist was making gospel music, Snoop set the record straight on his motivations for the project and what critics can do with their opinions.
“This is not a money-driven project – it’s a spirit-driven project,” he said.
He continued, “If the church was full of saints it wouldn’t be right. So if you find someone trying to find their way back home, the natural thing to do is to be warm welcoming, open your arms and say “Brother, we accept you for who you are and what you’re going through. Come as you are. We know you’ve been doing wrong and you want to get right and we want to help you get right.” We’re not gonna’ throw stones on you when you’re trying to get right and walking back into the church house. That’s what’s running people out the church right now as we speak,”
He then turned to camera, addressing viewers and said: “What about you? Have you checked your status? Are you going to heaven? Why are you judging me? How much have you done for the Lord?”
Meanwhile, 5 days ago, the rapper scored his first number one on the American Billboard gospel chart.
“With all of the negativity happening in the world right now, I figured it was time to do something positive to bring people together,” he said speaking at the Essence Festival March 27, 2018.
