President Yoweri Museveni was in Apach District on Monday to preside over this years’ 36th Tarehe Sita celebrations when he condemned rape, suggesting that those found guilty of such as offence deserve to be killed, the Daily Monitor reports.
The President argued that rapists are to blame for the transmission of deadly communicable diseases to their innocent victims.
“A rapist is a killer and he deserves to be killed,” the President said, as quoted by the Daily Monitor .
“The reason UPDF has succeeded among other is discipline. The UDPF respects the population. When you kill a person, we kill you. You (soldiers) rape a woman, we shall shoot you.”
As expected, when the Bible mentions the crime of rape, it is depicted as a gross violation of God’s design for the treatment of the human body.
But as to whether death should be the ultimate punishment for rapists in Uganda, this is debatable among Christians.
“Christians should never rejoice when the death penalty is employed, but at the same time, they should not fight against the government’s right to execute the perpetrators of the most evil of crimes.” says Redeemed Church Pastor Godfrey Kironde, when contacted for a comment on the matter, adding that we must recognize that God has given government the authority to determine when capital punishment is due.
