A new award category, the Gospel Legends, has been included into the annual VIGA Music Award which seek to recognize and reward Christian/gospel music figures for their outstanding accomplishments.

The VIGA committee announced the award category on Wednesday, saying it is intended to help the contemporary fans of Gospel appreciate the history and/or journey that Gospel Music has gone through.

“Our first recipient of the award is a renowned gospel minister in the country. He founded and was part of a choir that has written and sung over 290 songs,” the committee said in a statement posted on Facebook.

“The choir is Pentecostal; but before he died, the Late Archbishop Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo secured rights for their songs to be incorporated in the worship books of the Church of Uganda. The choir is still going strong and the blue and white color of their uniform is in memory of the color then, of the school where Jesus met our award recipient,” they added.

The announcement comes at a time VIGA marks a decade of existence.

This year’s awarding ceremony is slated for Saturday 19th May, 2018 at the Imperial Royale Hotel beginning 5:00 pm. Entry is Ugx 75,000 Gold and Ugx 30,000 Silver.
