The East African Institute of Aga Khan University has carried out a survey so as to understand the values, attitudes, concerns and aspirations of Uganda’s Youth.

Launched on Thursday at the Kampala Serena Hotel, details indicate that more youth are putting God first first in their lives, before work, family, freedom and integrity.

When asked what the youth valued, 79% said they valued faith first, 47% valued work, 39% valued family first, 37% valued family and 25% valued freedom and only 5% valued integrity first.

Furthermore, when asked what they think about the government, 80% said they trust government, 88% trust families first, 84% trust religious institution, and 75% trust politicians.

The recent State of Uganda’s Population Report indicated that Uganda has the world’s youngest population, with over 78% below 30 years, a revelation that also come with concerns.

On Unemployment, findings indicate that joblessness among the youth is at 52% – highest among rural women, at 62%.

The survey reveals that while the youth are alarmed about unemployment, they are willing to be part of the solution by creating jobs through entrepreneurship.

22% of the youth according to the survey are reportedly self employed while 26% were in formal employment and specifically self-employment rates were lowest among youth with university level education.

NTV Uganda reports that the minister of state for youth and children Affairs, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, who was the Guest of Honor at the report launch pledged on behalf of government to use the findings to find solutions to the challenges of the youth in the country.
