Old boys of Namilyango College under their alumni association, the Namilyango College Old Boy’s Association (NACOBA), parents, well-wisher and all stakeholders on Saturday gathered at the College to mark its 114th anniversary.

Namilyango College is one of the most prestigious schools in Uganda, owing to its history, influence, excellent academic performance and dominance in sports.

It was established on March 23, 1902 by the Mill Hill Fathers, becoming the first senior school in the country, and second school in Uganda after Mengo Primary School.

In August 1929, the Brothers of Christian Instruction order (The Kisubi Brothers) took over the school and named it ‘St. Aloysius College.’ However, after three years, the Mill Hill Fathers took it over again in 1932, under Fr. P. Preyde.

The school became known as Namilyango College after the government introduced a new system of naming schools whereby secondary boarding schools were to be called colleges.

The celebrations were marked with a special church service graced by former Bishop of Lugazi Diocese, Mathias Ssekamanya.

He [Bishop Ssekamanya] urged students who have gone through the school to remember the roles church leaders play in the development of the country when they become policy makers in future.

Present headmaster Gerald Muguluma said that the school has cited a number of milestones including continuous academic excellence. He boasted that Namilyango is one of the few traditional schools that have maintained excellent performance.

The President of NACOBA, Fred Gyaviira Kyaka, said they have registered several tangible achievements in the last few years, including tiling of students’ dormitories, expanding the school’s sickbay and repairing the main hall which was becoming dilapidated because of old age.

Prominent alumni from this school include Bart Magunda Katureebe, justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda, Onegi Obel, governor, Bank of Uganda 1973–1978 and presidential advisor, Geoffrey Onegi Obel, former chairman, NSSF board of directors among others.
