Gospel music is a music genre in Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. For Muro Ronald, a Ugandan gospel Artist, it is not just for aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes. It is much more.

Given all the liberty to live life as he wanted as a child, gospel music singer Mutumba Ronald aka Muro at one moment got entangled in rave and drugs while growing up.

Born on 18th July 1988, the Journalism and Mass communication graduate from UMCAT has four sisters and one brother.

“I don’t exactly know what a standard testimony is supposed to be, so I am just going to say how I feel and how God has changed my life,” he said, as UG Christian News kick started a conversation with him about ministry, life and family.

I would like to start with light heated questions. First off, what is your favorite hobby a side music, whether today or as a youngster? And finally, share with us your favorite bible scripture and why is it your favorite Bible text?

Muro: I am mostly at the gym, dance studio or listening to music. I love Romans 6:14-15, it’s about God’s grace. We don’t need to sin just because we are under grace. Grace is good but, we need to understand it very well.

That’s powerful. Let’s talk briefly about your upbringing. What was home like? What were those essential moments and experiences that led you to a life of devotion in Christian music ministry?

Muro: I grew up from a catholic family, dedicated to church however; my family gave us a lot of liberty. At a tender age, we were given the liberty to do what we wanted to do. This brought me heads on with bad company, street fighting, night clubbing and worse things.

In all this, I woke up to a brighter day. I thank God for calling me to the greater light of His salvation. From that time my life was changed. I decided to praise God and worship Him for changing my life forever.

‘Proud to be Christian’ has always been a mission statement of your life. It actually is a title to one of your songs as well. In your own words, why has this been your passion and mission?

Muro: Proud to be a Christian, I am so proud of who I am in Christ. Never will I regret it. I enjoy the life in Christ Jesus. A lot of people speak negatively about my ministry and life in Christ, that can’t change me or stop me from praising and worshiping Him. I have seen change in my life ever since I got saved. I found light. Salvation is my life.

Does your new album, capture the heart and soul of who you are as an individual and articulate your message well as a minister of the Gospel?

Muro: Yes, my album ‘THE GREAT I AM’ describes who I am and glorifies God. It centers on who He is.  The message in my music reaches both the young and grown up physically and spiritually.

What would people be surprised to know about you? Who are some of your favorite artists outside of the gospel realm?

Muro: [Laughs] People will always be surprised about me in all ways, in ministry and outside of ministry. I am always full of surprises.

I don’t have a favorite artist outside the gospel realm though before ministry, I used to love Eminen and the Game.

If you had to pick one or two, what experiences would you say have had the biggest impact on your life?

Muro: There is this one experience in Kigali, Rwanda. I was there for ministry in 2007 with a friend called Diana. Right when I had stepped off the stage, one guy came to me and said he wanted to give his life to Christ – I was so humbled.

Narrating his story, I got to find out that he was a staunch witch doctor. We preached to him and he fully gave his life to Christ, becoming born again.

What advice would you give to fellow gospel artists, knowing what you know now?

Muro: The advice I can give them is to embrace unity and also live on the word of God always. One other thing I can say and always say is, if you ain’t got Christ, you out of season.
