Priests from the Catholic Church, led by Rev. Fr Denis Kizito Ssebunya, the episcopal vicar for Mitala Maria Vicariate have on Saturday sprinkled Holy water upon a section of the Kampala – Masaka highway, following inexplicable fatal accidents reported at this section since the year begun.

The road was closed for 20 minutes, and special prayers conducted to cleanse the area.

The prayers come two days after police reported 9 dead, 16 injured in yet another accident along the highway.

The Archbishop of Kampala Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, through Rev. Fr Denis Kizito sent condolences to the families who have lost their beloved ones in road accidents.

Uganda is one of the African countries with the highest rate of road accidents, a World Health Organisation report on road safety says.

“The number of deaths is unacceptable and alarming. We all need to do something about this,” Lwanga said in the message.

A recent press statement from WHO notes that only 28 countries, covering seven per cent of the world’s population, have comprehensive road safety laws on five key risk factors of drink driving, speeding, failing to use motorcycle helmets, seat-belts, and child restraints.
