First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs. Janet Museveni has through a release from her office mentioned that Uganda has a lot to learn from the people of Israel, who have managed to turn around their barren dry land into an area of fruit production for exports.

She says that the skills the Israeli people have, come from God as seen in the bible.

These remarks come following Mrs. Museveni’s Thursday meeting with the officials from Agrostudies, an agricultural capacity building organisation in Israel, at State House Nakasero in Kampala.

The first lady plans to get Israeli experts to help train trainers for the Skilling Uganda Programme, the New Vision reports.

“I want to connect with trainers from Israel, who have the positive mindset, to come and train trainers for our many vocational institutions, and these will in turn impart skills and motivate out young people.” She said in a meeting held with the officials from Agrostudies who included the chief executive officer, Yaron Tamir and the chief operations officer, Inbal Shoval.

Israel has gained a worldwide reputation for its ability to turn barren desert into useful and arable land.

According to reports, with desert covering a large part of its surface, Israel has had to quickly develop solutions for its lack of arable land and potable water. Israeli research, innovation, achievements and education on this topic now span the globe in tackling problems common to all desert dwellers.

“We are focusing on skills development and we look at Agrostudies as a skills development project. We hope that the young people who undergo the one-year agricultural skills apprenticeship with the Agrostudies training center in Israel can pass on the skills to their peers who they come back hone,” Mrs. Museveni said.

She raised concern over unemployment, saying that she feels sad when Uganda keeps importing experts to work in areas such as road construction and oil and gas, yet the youth are unemployed.

She also noted that what Uganda needs in this season is to add value to education by training the hands to work and hence making the cycle of education complete.
