The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has urged the people of Namavundu in Kamuli District, to desist from grabbing land donated to religious institutions.

“These days, it’s common for clan members to chase or disown establishments like schools, churches, mosques or even health facilities after the death of the landlord, ” Kadaga said.

Kadaga made the remarks at the official opening ceremony of Kikiki Busimba Mosque in Namavundu, Kamuli last week.

This development comes as a sect of Ugandans, including religious leaders continue to battle the recently proposed amendments to the Land law that seek to provide for compulsory acquisition of land for government development projects such as roads and other infrastructure.

As some believe such amendments are aimed at government trying to grab their land, Lands minister Betty Amongi told press the changes are intended to shorten the processes involved by allowing government to start the projects pending negotiations on compensations with the affected persons.

According to Article 273 of the Constitution, all land in Uganda belongs to the people.

Article 26(2) stipulates that: “No person shall be compulsorily deprived of property or any interest in right over property of any description except where taking possession is necessary for public use and, or, is made under the law after prompt payment of fair and adequate compensation.
