Media reporters were blocked from covering proceedings of a meeting President Yoweri Museveni held with religious leaders under umbrella organisation the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) at State House, Entebbe on Tuesday.

Emerging reports suggest that the meeting was ‘fruitful and cordial’

“We came out happy,” Archbishop Stanley Ntagali, one of the IRCU delegates told media when contacted.

According to a statement from State House, Museveni and the clergy discussed development matters, including the Government and religious institutions working together to sensitize the masses on household eradication.

The group included Jonah Lwanga,  the leading prelate of the Orthodox church, Pastors Joseph Serwadda, Joshua Lwere, Mufti Shaban Mbajje, representatives from the Catholic Church and Joshua Kitakule, secretary general at the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU).

“We have always wanted to meet the president to talk about a number of issues. The meeting was friutful and cordial. We came out happy,” Ntagali told a state linked newspaper, but a declined to discuss the content of the meeting on grounds that he was not the council chairman.

He said the president invited IRCU to the meeting after a request from the council.

Bishop Lwere was quoted as saying the religious leaders have been seeking an opportunity to discuss with Museveni the modalities of fostering national dialogue since the end of 2016 elections.

“Basically, we discussed how to promote national dialogue and how to work together to help eradicate poverty,” he said.

New Vision reached out to Mubajje for the agenda of the meeting, but he would not discuss it with the newspaper.
