Nyege Nyege Festival is now considered the most important 4-day international music festival in East Africa for both its one of a kind curation and its unique afropolitan party vibe, the organisers claim. Courtesy Photo: Revellers at the 2017 Nyege Nyege festival, now sponsored by MTN Uganda.

Ethics and Integrity Minister Fr Simon Lokodo says he has received credible information from Religious Leaders that the purpose of MTN sponsored Nyege Nyege festival which is expected to take place this weekend has been compromised to accommodate the celebration and recruitment of young people into homosexuality, and the LGBT movement.

Lokodo, whose efforts to terminate the festival have so far been frustrated by Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Jeje Odongo, said this event is close to “devil worshiping” and “not acceptable.”

He said this on Tuesday while addressing journalists in Kampala. Fr Simon Lokodo explained that he had alerted relevant stake holders and security officials to ensure that the event doesn’t take place.

“We have information that open sex, noise, homosexuality, LGBTI will be part of this event,” Lokodo said.

“There will be nudity and sexuality done at any time of the hour. The very name of the festival is provocative. It means “sex, sex” or urge for sex. We have been informed it’s taking place near Owen Fall’s dam. This brings uncertainty and fear,” he added.

“The person organising this event is a foreigner and his stay in Uganda will be affected by this event – Let foreigners not come to Uganda for sex. If you are coming for sexual reasons worse still homosexuality and LGBTQ, stay away,” Lokodo said.

Nevertheless, Uganda Media Center executive director and government Spokesperson, Mr Ofwono Opondo announced via Twitter, and said that the government had not cancelled the event.

According to the organisers, ‘Nyege Nyege’ reportedly stands for peace, respect and abundant joy.

“Nyege Nyege is part of a Kampala based arts incubator that includes an arts residency and community studios, a record label and artist management agency called Nyege Nyege Tapes and a party crew called Boutiq Electroniq,” a statement on the official festival website reads.
