Christians were out in force to usher in the New Year at Old Kampala SSS play grounds, undeterred by the wet weather on Sunday (Dec 31).

Many braved the rain as others made use of umbrellas and temporary structures lifted by service providers for shade at the venue.

The event, labelled 12th National Annual Prayer Day and Night was organised by Bishop David Livingstone Kiganda of Christianity Focus Centre Church, Kisenyi – Kampala under the theme; ‘You will cross your Jordan Today,’ inspired by Deuteronomy 9:1-2.

Amid the celebrations, heightened security measures were put in place. These included bag checks and announcements asking the public to be on alert for anything suspicious.

In his speech towards midnight, Bishop Kiganda urged congregants to work hard in 2018 and embrace the culture of saving.

He stated that several end up living beyond their means when they spend extravagantly, hence deterred development.

“Embrace the culture of saving,” he said.

The event also gathered several preachers including Pr Cindy Kiganda, Pr Michael Kimuli, Ap John Bunjo, Pr Michael Kyazze, and gospel musicians Pr Wilson Bugembe, Juliet Meme among others who culminated in a six-minute extravaganza at midnight.
