Church of Uganda has this week announced the appointment of former presidential candidate, Amama Mbabazi to the committee organizing this year’s Martyrs’ Day special celebration in Namugongo on 3rd June.

Mr Mbabazi, a former Prime Minister, is expected to co-Chair the committee together with Honorable Ruhakana Rugunda.

“They are challenging us to double the number of Anglicans participating in the 3rd June Namugongo celebrations,” The Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali said as he delivered his Easter message at the provincial office in Namirembe, Kampala on Thursday.

He also said there will be a health camp as well as other programmes for children, youth, and urged believers to make a special effort to mobilize big numbers from their dioceses to participate in the celebrations.

“This year’s Martyrs’ Day organizers are the Dioceses of greater Kigezi,” Archbishop Ntagali added.

The day, observed across the country, honors the martyrdom of 45 young men both Catholic and Anglican whose conversion to Christianity between 1885 and 1887 provoked the then King of Buganda, Mwanga II to order for their massacre.

Report say that an estimated three million grace the celebrations at either shrine.
