The parents of a young girl, Jackline Mukama, who was diagnosed with a Pineal gland tumor in November 2015 at Nsambya hospital, are hoping the public can help them raise funds to save their daughter.

The five-year-old was in February 2016 advised to seek further medical assistance elsewhere when the doctors at Platinum Medical Centre realised that her tumor could not be removed due to its location.

They inserted a shunt in her and recommended her to radiotherapy at Mulago Hospital but the machine collapsed before Mukama was treated.

Pineal tumors arise in the region of the pineal gland. This gland is a small structure deep within the brain. These tumors represent about 1% of all brain tumors but account for 3% to 8% of the intracranial tumors that occur in children.

As with most brain tumors, the cause of pineal tumors is largely unknown. Research is underway to discover the possible causes.

In May 2016, she lost her sight due to the severity of the tumor

A friend connected the parents to George Ntambi of Action for the Disadvantaged People (ACDIPE) Uganda who connected them to Narayana Hospital in India for Mukama to be operated on at a cost of sh40m.

Through contributions from ACDIPE, Healthy Initiative Association, friends and well-wishers, Jackline left for India on 31/07/2016.

At Narayana hospital, during the operation, doctors discovered other complications and came up with a new treatment plan which costs $45,000.

Jackline and her mother are now stranded in India.

“The parents are unable to raise the money – financially unstable to handle such an expensive treatment after having sold the little they had to make her go through the treatment up to this hospital where she is now lying on her bed helplessly after the hospital’s decision for a new treatment plan.” ACDIPE Uganda says.

Adding, “The total cost of the new treatment plan is beyond ACDIPE`s budget so we appeal to all good Samaritans to come in for her rescue.”
